Mal rockig und meist poppig singt Natasha Borzilova meist sehr persönlich von Liebe und Schmerz. In ihren Songs kann sich eigentlich jeder wieder erkennen. Während das Titellied "Cheap Escape" noch von der romantischen Flucht zu zweit träumt - "Oh look, I found a couple Dollars under the lining / oh, this could be great / We could share my pack of smoke and a lighter / what a cheap escape" -, ist die Beziehung in "I'm Angry" und "Something I Never Knew About Love" dann doch in die Brüche gegangen: "And I just found out something I never knew about love / It always tries to slip away / things are only gonna get worse / That's what you said / You gave up so fast / Guess I wasn't good enough / But I'll never know / Anyway you're gone".
Natasha Borzilovas Musik erinnert ein wenig an Bell, Book and Candle; ihre Stimme entfernt auch an die Cranberries und Alanis Morissette. Zwar nicht immer originell, steht Natasha Borzilova doch für soliden Pop mit einprägsamen Refrains. Und alles ist selbst gemacht: Texte, Melodien - und Gitarre spielt sie auch. Ihr Englisch ist nahezu akzentfrei.
Borzilova kam in den 1980ern aus dem russischen Obninsk in die USA, wo sie jahrelang mit der Band Bering Strait Erfolg hatte und auch drei CDs veröffentlichte. "Cheap Escape" ist nun ihr erstes Solo-Album; die Songs sind über die letzten Jahre hinweg entstanden.

Die Stimmungsvariationen sind groß: "How Do You Do That" und "Dear Diary", gesungen sehr zart und hoch, stehen in starkem Kontrast zum rockigen "Real Fight", zu dem man bestens Rock'n'Roll tanzen kann. Viel Schwung hat auch "Matches", der Text ist eine Art musikalische Selbsttherapie: "And I will feel the sun on my face as it rises / The new day will look in my eyes / I will scatter the worst of the memories / and leave them behind". Sehr poetisch sind auch die Zeilen, die dem Lied den Titel geben: "Look at me and tell me you like what you see / I haven't heard it for so long / I am cold as the ice that is under my skin / have no matches for the candle I carry within".
Die ganze CD ist ziemlich kurz, aber man kann ja schnell noch einmal auf "Play" drücken.
